May The Celebrations Begin!
This is the month of celebrations here in Albuquerque! Start the month off on the right foot with the 36th Annual Run for the Zoo and run or walk to raise money for our awesome zoo. No need to travel to New York for the iconic Broadway musical, Hamilton, when you can see it right here in town at Popejoy Hall. Speaking of iconic, relive your favorite childhood Variety shows recreated by twins, Anthony and Eddie Edwards at the Kimo Theater in Downtown ABQ. Get out and embrace this beautiful weather we’re having with lots of fun activities at the Rio Grande Nature Center and Casa San Ysidro while learning about New Mexico culture. Go pedal to the metal towards the end of the month with the 37th Annual Car Show at the Albuquerque Museum and see some amazing classic cars!
36th Annual Run for the Zoo
Ready! Set! Run for the New Mexico BioPark Society’s 36th Annual Run for the Zoo on May 7! Run or walk at your own level with the five different races to choose from. If you’re looking for a challenge, there will be a half marathon, 10K timed, 5K timed, and a 5K fitness. For those of you who just want to take it easy and have the whole family get in on the action, there will also be a 1-mile Fun Run/Walk. All race courses loop you right to the back of the Zoo where you can spend the rest of the day hanging out with the animals. Tie up your laces and get ready to race!

Hamilton: The Musical
Presented by Popejoy Hall, Hamilton is the story of America then, told by America now. Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B, and Broadway, this is a must-see musical you don’t want to miss. Go back in time with the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and see how this award-winning musical has had a profound impact on culture, politics, and education. Tickets are available from May 9 through May 28, but you better get them fast!
The Ultimate Variety Show
Attention all 70’s and 80’s kids! Here’s your chance to relive your favorite childhood Variety shows at the infamous Kimo Theater! On May 13, see them live and re-created by Las Vegas’ number one impersonators of all time, Anthony and Eddie Edwards as they use state-of-the-art makeup to look and sound like your favorite legendary superstars of today and yesterday. Here’s to the best date night you’ll ever have!
Spring Garden Festival
Come celebrate springtime with a garden festival at the Rio Grande Nature Center all weekend long starting May 13! This is an event you will want to bring your friends and family to enjoy.
There’s something for everyone, including guided walks, live acoustic music, and a plant sale fundraiser for the Friends of the Rio Grande Nature Center State Park. Your children will have a ball with all of the activities and exhibitions planned for them. Put on some sunscreen, grab your sunglasses, and spend your weekend in nature!
Heritage Day
Saturday, May 13 is Heritage Day and we’re celebrating at Casa San Ysidro! Get ready for an all-day event celebrating our local heritage that exhibits the living traditions of New Mexico. Explore the museum’s collection of rare artifacts, listen to live music, try traditional foods, and learn about folk art from traditional artists that come from all across New Mexico. The whole family can get the chance to participate in some fun traditional activities like leather punching, planting seeds, spinning and weaving wool, and so much more! See before your eyes as the heart of Corrales comes to life on this special day!
37th Annual Car Show
Calling all car enthusiasts! Start your engines for the 37th Annual NMCCC Classic Auto Show on May 21 at the Albuquerque Museum! Every year they have a special theme to celebrate and this year’s theme is tail fins. From 10:00 am – 3:30 pm, take advantage of this opportunity to see some incredible antique, classic, exotic, and sports cars, along with trucks, motorcycles, and vintage camper trailers that will be covering the Museum’s parking lot. There will be a special area for you to see some automobile art and model vehicles inside the Museum as well!
